ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The air in Tompkins County is now considered hazardous.
Officials say the Air Quality Index (AQI) has progressed to scale over 301 as of 9:00 a.m. today. The Air Quality Advisory issued by the DEC was upgraded to an alert yesterday afternoon when the AQI progressed above 201, with the official designation of very unhealthy. By comparison, typical AQI levels in Tompkins County this time of year range from 0-50.
The New York State Department of Health recommends all people avoid physical activity outdoors when air quality is considered hazardous. High-risk groups, which includes the very young, older adults, and those with preexisting respiratory problems, are advised to remain indoors and keep activity levels low.
Tompkins County Whole Health is discouraging any unnecessary outdoor activity until the air quality returns below hazardous levels.
"Particle pollution can cause serious health problems, including asthma attacks, heart attacks, strokes and early death," said Whole Health Commissioner Frank Kruppa. "At this elevated level of pollutants, it is recommended for everyone to avoid outdoor physical activities to minimize exposure. We advise our community to stay up to date on the ongoing air quality situation."
High quality mask use is recommended, which includes N95 and KN95 masks. Cloth and surgical masks are ineffective at reducing the inhalation of fine particles in the air.
